The William Hunter Memorial

The Memorial, which stands close by Wilson's Corner just in front of Amy Child's Saloon in the heart of Brentwood, commemorates the silk-weaver's apprentice who was burnt at the stake for his religious beliefs at the age of 19 on 26th March 1555. The popular reason given for this is that he was discovered reading the Bible in English by a Roman Catholic Priest. The Roman Catholic Church regarded such as heretics - and there was only one thing to do with such disobedient people, and that was to put them to death
